Google

  Google

Google LLC is one of the world’s largest technology companies, primarily known for its search engine, which organizes information from across the web and makes it universally accessible. Google operates under its parent company, Alphabet Inc., and offers a wide range of services — from search and advertising to artificial intelligence, cloud computing, mobile operating systems, and smart devices.

  • Founded on: September 4, 1998

  • Headquarters: Mountain View, California, United States

  • Founders: Larry Page and Sergey Brin

  • Current CEO: Sundar Pichai (since 2015)

  • Parent Company: Alphabet Inc. (formed in 2015)

Origin of Google’s Name

The name “Google” comes from the mathematical term “googol,” which means 1 followed by 100 zeros (10¹⁰⁰). The word was chosen to symbolize the company’s mission:

“To organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”

Originally, Google was meant to be called “Backrub” in 1996 because it analyzed web “backlinks” to rank pages. However, the founders later decided the name was too awkward. When brainstorming, a graduate student suggested “googol,” but when they searched for the domain name, they accidentally typed “google.com” — and that spelling was available. So, it became official.

Founders of Google

  • Larry Page: A computer scientist and entrepreneur who developed the PageRank algorithm, which became the foundation of Google Search.

  • Sergey Brin: Also a computer scientist, Brin collaborated with Page while both were PhD students at Stanford University.

Their combined vision was to build a search engine that could rank web pages by importance using mathematical analysis, not just keyword frequency.

The Creator of the Google Logo

The first Google logo was designed by Sergey Brin himself using GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) in 1998.
However, the more famous colored logo that we know today was designed by Ruth Kedar, a graphic designer and professor at Stanford University.

  • The colors (blue, red, yellow, green) were chosen to show creativity and a sense of playfulness.

  • Google uses primary colors (blue, red, yellow) but breaks the pattern with green, representing the company’s idea of not following traditional rules.

Over time, Google has changed its logo several times:

  • 1998: First prototype by Sergey Brin.

  • 1999: Redesigned by Ruth Kedar.

  • 2010–2015: Minor changes in font and shading.

  • 2015: Introduced the current “sans-serif” flat design logo — simple, modern, and mobile-friendly.

Google’s Core Data and Services

Google operates and manages massive amounts of data across multiple platforms. The company’s data can be divided into several types:

a) Search Data

  • Google indexes hundreds of billions of webpages.

  • It uses algorithms like PageRank, BERT, and MUM to understand and rank content.

  • The search engine processes over 8.5 billion searches per day (as of 2025).

b) User Data

Google collects and processes data such as:

  • Search history

  • Location information

  • Device information

  • YouTube watch history

  • Gmail and Google Drive content (for personalization, not advertising)

  • Android app usage
This helps improve recommendations, AI responses, and ad relevance.

c) Advertising Data

  • Google’s main revenue source comes from Google Ads and AdSense.

  • It tracks user interests, website visits, and engagement to serve personalized advertisements.

d) AI and Machine Learning Data

  • Google uses data for training AI models like Gemini (formerly Bard), Google Assistant, and Google Translate.

  • Machine learning helps power products like Google Photos (image recognition), Gmail Smart Reply, and YouTube recommendations.

e) Cloud Data

  • Google Cloud Platform (GCP) hosts massive datasets for businesses and developers.

  • Includes BigQuery, Firebase, TensorFlow, and Vertex AI.
